Things I learned while in Tuscany.
- Wild irises grow in profusion by the side of the roads
- Even Italian men shouldn’t wear tights
- It is impossible to feed the Minx too much gnocchi and pesto
- English tomatoes are ghastly (not actually a new insight)
- Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 1997 is a very fine wine indeed
(The first photo is of the hotel)

The best red wine I have *ever* tasted was Brunello di Montalcino, while on honeymoon with my first husband (1986). Can’t remember where we were, but it was a little old hilltop town, a wizened waitress decanted the wine over a candle flame, and I thought ‘what a load of pretentious old tosh’. I was very, very wrong…

I know! I used to think I hated tomatoes until I tasted Italian tomatoes!! Mmm! Your little Minx just looks so cute!

Hi D! We did a wine tasting there and tasted three different Brunellos from the same year – one made in the traditional style, one made from the same grapes but in a more modern way (using French oak barrels)and the Riserva made using grapes from just one vineyard (with the oldest vines on the property). It was extraordinary how different each one tasted, and also how much nicer the Riserva was than the others…
FCG – I used to think exactly the same and still refuse to eat those horrid hard golfball size things they fly over from Guernsey.

So funny, I’m reading your posts in reverse order so I just read the one saying you didn’t get details and then I saw this one with lots of gorgeous detail shots AND a tomato and mozarella close-up, I chuckled.

But I have to force myself to think ‘I’m sure there must a nice door knocker here somewhere’ so these are pretty much all the detail photos I shot.
Whereas I still have about three hundred pictures of dull landscapes to subject you all to.
