Guns stand for self-assertion, and personal power. This is an important part of American identity; the idea that you can hold your own or even make a mark on the world by yourself. Unfortunately, the kind of people who need guns for that kind of self-reassurance are the ones who are most frightened and most likely to use them. The violence and fear that guns engender is self-perpetuating, a true American tragedy. I don’t blame you for wondering just what we could be thinking.
