More Thoughts on American Life

I hate to get political on this blog, but why oh why is no one even discussing tightening up the gun laws?  It’s so damn crazy and so damn sad.

(And yes, I know all about the Constitution and the gun lobby).

Guns stand for self-assertion, and personal power. This is an important part of American identity; the idea that you can hold your own or even make a mark on the world by yourself. Unfortunately, the kind of people who need guns for that kind of self-reassurance are the ones who are most frightened and most likely to use them. The violence and fear that guns engender is self-perpetuating, a true American tragedy. I don’t blame you for wondering just what we could be thinking.
